Fall Speaker Series: What’s good? What’s right? What’s up?

November 1, 2017 @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm

“Civic Engagement, from the ancient Greeks to Greektown, Baltimore”

Centuries before Jesus, the Greeks created the polis, a city-state characterized by a lively sense of community and guided by the concept of kairos, doing the right thing at the right time.  The ideal city engendered responsibility as well as rights, and everyone was taught to work for the common good. Informed by these ancient ideas, how might we bring about positive change?  Join Loyola University professor Allen Brizee as he connects ancient truths to modern problems.  Knowledge of Greek not required!

Allen Brizee is associate professor of writing at Loyola University Maryland and author of the 2016 book, Partners in Literacy: A Writing Center Model for Civic Engagement. At Loyola, he uses civic engagement to teach his courses, and his research focuses on building effective college-community relationships.

Supper at 6:00 p.m.; program at 7:00 p.m.
